I recently read the book: “The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance”, by Tony Schwartz, Jean Gomes and Catherine McCarthy. I thought this was a very interesting read, and wanted to provide a short review of it.
Effective leadership comes with its share of challenges, especially when an unexpected event occurs that results in serious turmoil at the leadership level where the leadership authority becomes splintered. When there is a crack at senior levels within an organization, conflict among leaders can negatively impact the entire organization which can put the success of a project at great risk. A plan is only as good as the people executing and managing the plan. One such example of a splintering in leadership is the General McCrystal incident.
The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is now the most devastating oil spill in US History. As tens of thousands of barrels of oil flood the Gulf contaminating the ocean, killing wildlife, destroying the fishing industry, and affecting the lives of the so many people, BP’s chief executive officer Tony Hayward has become an important symbol of ineffective leadership. For business and political leaders, there are many lessons in leadership to be learned from the BP oil disaster.
